Walter Nathaniel Humphreys
Walter Nathaniel Humphreys, born February 13th, 1946 in Oroville, California, passed away Sunday, January 8th, 2023 surrounded by his family and the love and prayers of the many people who his kindness and generous spirit touched throughout his life. He joins his departed daughter Marilee Jo Humphreys in heaven and is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Lorna; his three children Thomas Humphreys, Amanda Montgomery, and Nicole Ledford; their spouses John Aquino, Josh Montgomery, and Brad Ledford; the grandchildren he adored: Conner, Grace, Benji, and Maddox Montgomery; and Evelyn, Pierce, and Nate Ledford; his brother Stephen Humphreys; his sister Lorena Franks; his mother-in-law Mary Belle Coulter and brother-in-law Ernest Coulter. Walt was preceded in death by his sister Joyce Grubbs.
He began his career as a teacher, and this role of mentor and advisor remained a constant theme throughout his lifetime. He could always be counted on to support his children’s and grandchildren’s school and sports communities with countless hours of labor and love. As the owner/operator of North State Curb Company, his attention to perfection was matched only by the kindness he showed toward his employees. In his later years, he returned to teaching as a reading tutor at Lion’s Bookstore, rounding out a life lived helping others achieve.
Walt was most alive when sailing across the water. He loved his sailboat almost as much as he enjoyed having his family around him. As a good friend of his said, “There are dads you absolutely know are heaven bound when they are free from their earthly bonds.” Walt was definitely one of those dads.
Walt’s battle with Parkinson’s Disease showed us how brave and patient he was until the end. In lieu of flowers, his family requests a donation to the Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, which can be found at https://give.michaeljfox.org/give/421686/#!/donation/checkout . A service will be held for friends and family on February 18th, 2023, at 2:00 pm at Trinity United Methodist Church in Chico, CA.
