In Memoriam

Kathy Helen Severin

Jun 10, 2020

Kathy was born December 15, 1955 to Richard and Helen Wheeler in Cheltenham, Pennsylvania near Philadelphia.  Her grandmother Nan Spranger was very involved in her life for many years.

Kathy was an adventurous, outgoing child, and a great fun with her older brother Rick and her many friends, enjoying wintertime sledding, ice skating, and other activities.

Kathy later moved her with family to Canoga Park, California and graduated from El Camino High School in 1973, and then studied music at Pierce Junior College, Woodland Hills, California.

In 1974 Kathy met Vance Severin, the love of her live and future husband.  In 1975 Kathy, Vance, and friends Sandy Owens and Bruce Kaufman moved to Mammoth Lakes to work at the Mammoth Mountain Ski Area and enjoy the skiing lifestyle and beautiful mountain environment.  This adventure was a lifechanging experience for Kathy and Vance, who loved the outdoor recreational lifestyle and intimacy of living in a small town.  Alas, there was little snow and even fewer professional opportunities during the subsequent drought winters of 75-76 and 76-77 so they returned to southern California to regroup.

In early 1979 Kathy and Vance moved to Chico, California to in what was then a small town and enjoy the wonderful local community and beautiful environment.  While at first they planned to return to Mammoth Lakes they fell in love with the area and never, ever wished to leave Chico.  Vance began his career with Butte County Environmental Health.

Kathy and Vance were married in West Hills, California and had a wonderful honeymoon in Puerta Vallarta, Mexico

Kathy resumed her education at Butte College, and completed her Liberal Arts degree at California State University, Chico.  After achieving her teaching credential, she taught classroom music in the Oroville, Thermalito, and Los Molinos before becoming a Personalized Learning Teacher at Core Butte Charter School, Chico

Kathy and Vance have two children and one grandchild, Cindy and her beautiful one-year old daughter Abigail, and son Scott.

Kathy passed away at her home on the morning of June 9, 2020 of natural causes.
