Karen Janette Vercruse
Karen Vercruse of Chico, CA passed away peacefully on January 21, 2023 surrounded by family and the prayers of many friends. Karen was born in Sacramento, Ca on September 25th,1950 to James and Josephine Shanks. She grew up on a 10,000 acre grain ranch in WalnutGrove, a small farming community in the Sacramento Delta. After she graduated from a private school, she went on to college at the University of Nevada, Reno. The summer after her freshman year, she met the love of her life, Gary Vercruse, in Tahoe and transferred to Chico State where she was an English major. Shortly after graduation , they married and relocated to Alhambra, Ca where she began working as an English tutor to second language learners. In 1972, they moved back to Chico and never left. Karen had a passion for Agriculture and politics. She had a long career as a Butte County Supervisor, California Water Board member as well as a member of the Planning Commission. After her time as Supervisor, she was an English and History teacher for many years. Her favorite actives included her horses and ministry. Karen had a passion for ministry and research. She gained many close confidants within the church community and thoroughly enjoyed being part of God’s work. She is preceded in death by her husband Gary. She is survived by her loving daughter Jaime Forslund, husband Randy Forslund and her grandkids Timber and Porter.
A celebration of Karen’s life will be held Saturday February 11th, 2023 at 2:00pm at First
Assembly of God in Chico.
